Madame Birdie (soft blue) Sample

I love fabrics with little birds and I always think they look so pretty in a room. I am sure birds on fabric have to be the most popular subject for fabric design, I find it very hard to steer away from them probably because they give you that lovely natural flowing feeling which you need for a pattern repeat. They are all around us so why not have them printed on our curtains and cushions. The idea for the little bird on the Madam Birdie design was from ceramics I found at the Bowes museum in County Durham. Quite often I will visit a museum and I take lots of photos and use them as a reference at a later date. I remember first sketching this design while I was sitting in a hospital room waiting for my son to recover from an operation after breaking his leg. I always take a little sketch book with me if I think I am going to have lots of time to kill, I look at the photos on my phone and then start drawing.
